Makalu Base Camp Trek Overview

The trek starts with your arrival in Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, you fly to Tumlingtar and start the trek. The trail crosses Arun valley at Num and moves up Kusuwa Khola providing stunning views of the snowcapped mountains in the backdrop. From Num, we walk along the banks of the Barun River to reach Seduwa. Thereon, we head along the banks of the Iowa Khola and take a brief stop at Tashigaon.

Climb some ridges to reach Khongma Danda and after a short rest at the tea house. Cross the mighty passes of Keke La (4127m), Shipton La (4170m), and Tutu La (4080m) to reach Dobate. As you marvel at the glory of Peak 6 (6534m) and Peak 7 (6758m), you reach the grazing grounds of Yangri Kharka and Langmale Kharka. Walk on a steep path to Shershon and find yourself in the vicinity of the Makalu Base Camp.

At the base camp, breathe in the sight of jaw-dropping mountains like Lhotse (8414m), Makalu (8463m), and Mt. Everest (8848m). After relishing the beauty of these Himalayas, we slowly make our way back to Yangri Kharka. Walk alongside the Barun River to reach Dobate and then after you cross the Kauma La Pass, you’ll reach Khongma Danda.

The downward trail takes you back to Tashigaon and Seduwa. After spending a night in Num, we head back to Tumlingtar. Catch a flight to Kathmandu where the entire Makalu base camp trek ends.

Itinerary


  • Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m)
    The trip begins with your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu. Our company representative will welcome you at the airport. Then, you will be transferred to the hotel. You can indulge in some quick tours around the nearby areas. Overnight in Kathmandu.

  • Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar then drive to Chichila (1,980m/6497ft): 50 mins flight, 3-4 hours’ drive
    The adventure kicks off with a scenic flight to the hill town of Tumlingtar. You will meet the rest of the crew at the airstrip, and then commence the trek to the small settlement of Chichila. It is an easy walk through the forests and villages to Chichila which is located at the top of a ridge. It is a settlement which is mostly inhabited by the Gurungs. Overnight in Chichila.

  • Trek from Chichila to Num (1,560m): 6-7 hours
    The trail passes through the Sherpa villages and ascends along a ridge. Our destination for the day is Num. The trail descends through the oak forests and climbs along the ridgeline to cross the Dauj La Pass. Thereon, you trek north towards Hururu through thick forests of rhododendron and pine. Up ahead you descend through the lush forests and pasture lands to reach Num. Overnight in Num.

  • Trek from Num to Seduwa (1,500m): 6-7 hours
    You start today’s trek with a steep descent down through the forest and move towards the Arun river. After crossing the river on a wooden bridge, you make a steep ascent and then enter the Makalu Barun National Park. After completing the legal formalities, you trek through the rhododendron and juniper forests and make your way to Seduwa. Overnight in Seduwa.

  • Trek from Seduwa to Tashigaon (2,100m): 4-5 hours
    From Seduwa, the trail crosses a wooden bridge over Isuwa Khola and passes several small villages and forests. We need to walk through paddy fields and the Kusuwa Khola as well. Later you make an uphill climb through the meadows and forested areas to reach Tashigaon. Upon arrival at Tashigaon, you will be surrounded by the Himalayan panorama of the Mt. Makalu (8463m). Overnight in Tashigaon.

  • Trek from Tashigaon to Khongma Danda (3,500m): 6-7 hours
    After Tashigaon, you walk along the pleasing shade of rhododendron and oak forests to reach Khongma Danda. On this route, you will not see any more villages but only a few huts made by the shepherds. As the trail progresses, the trees begins to disappear and only shrubs can be seen. In the final hours of the trek, you ascend through the stone stairs and head to the other side of the Kauma ridge known as Khongma Danda. Overnight in Khongma Danda.

  • Acclimatization Day
    You have gained high altitude in a short period of time. So you take this day for rest and adjust to the high altitude. During your stay at Khongma Danda, you can stroll around the area and enjoy the natural beauty. Interact with the Sherpa locals and learn about their culture. Overnight in Khongma Danda.

  • Trek from Khongma Danda to Dobate: 6-7 hours
    Leaving Khongma Danda behind, we venture on the road to Dobate. We need to climb the summit of the Keke La Pass (4127m) which is beyond scary and exhilarating. From the pass, we head to the amazing Kalo Pokhari Lake. After a couple of hours, you cross the Shipton La pass (4,170 m) and then descend to the Tutu La Pass (4080m) through the valley to Dobate. En route, you can enjoy the views of Peak 6 (6,524m) Peak 7 (6,758m) and Chamlang (7321m). Overnight in Dobate.

  • Trek from Dobate to Yangri Kharka (3,557m): 6-7 hours
    Today, you trek through the beautiful rhododendron forest and march towards the Barun river. You then take a pleasant walk ahead, slowly gaining altitude until you arrive at the final destination of today’s trek which is Yangri Kharka . It is a grazing ground and you can find small huts and sheep here. Overnight in Yangri Kharka.

  • Trek from Yangri Kharka to Langmale Kharka: (4,410m): 5-6 hours
    The trail takes you over the lavishing Himalayan backwoods and traverse little streams to the destination for the day which is the Langmale Kharka. We go through Merek and continue the trek walking on moraines and pass the small rural settlements to reach Langmale Kharka. This is another grazing ground where you can see ample cattle including yaks. Overnight in Langmale Kharka.

  • Trek from Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp: (4,870m/15,978ft): 6-7 hours
    On the 11th day, you will be gaining the highest altitude. We shall head to the base of the Makalu base camp which is the major destination in this trip. From Langmale Kharka, you make your way to Shershon and move ahead towards Makalu Base Camp. The trail is flat with icy glaciers and moraines. As you climb up to the base camp, you can witness the majestic Himalayan panorama surrounding you. Overnight in Makalu Base Camp.

  • Explore Makalu Base Camp
    You spend an additional day at the Makalu Base Camp. During your time at the base camp, you can enjoy the south face of Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,414m), and many other mountains. You can also hike up to the Barun Glacier and explore the Barun Pokhari. There are many campers and trekkers in the base camp and some even want to scale the Mt. Makalu (8463m). Overnight in Makalu Base Camp.

  • Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangri Kharka: 6-7 hours
    After spending some quality time at the Makalu Base Camp, you retrace your steps back to Yangri Kharka. The trail takes you through the thin woods and passes the settlements of Shershon, Langmale Kharka and Merek on the way. Slowly make your descent as the roads are slippery and treacherous. Overnight in Yangri Kharka.

  • Trek from Yangri Kharka to Dobate: 6-7 hours
    Today, we shall aim to reach Dobate. You trek along the rushing Barun River and pass through the rocky ridges and alpine forests. On the path to Dobate, you can encounter yaks, snow pigeons, and blue sheep. The trail descends down through the lush forests once again and takes you back to Dobate. Overnight in Dobate.

  • Trek from Dobate to Khongma Danda: 5-6 hours
    You start to climb steeply from Dobate to Mumbuk and then follow the trail through dense forests of fir and rhododendron. En route, you cross the Tutu La (4080), Shipton La Pass (4170m), Keke La (4127m), and Kauma La once again. These passes are difficult and technical so take appropriate caution. Finally, we make a final descent to reach Khongma Danda. Overnight in Khongma Danda.

  • Trek from Khongma Danda to Tashigaon: 4-5 hours
    After Khongma Danda, you pass through the thick forests and come across small lakes on the way back to Tashigaon. We make our way through the pasture lands to reach Dhara Kharka and then towards Sadema. Upon arrival, you explore the Sherpa culture, traditions and the way of life in this village. Overnight in Tashigaon.

  • Trek from Tashigaon to Seduwa: 4-5 hours
    Leaving Tashigaon behind, you start today’s trek along the small streams and pass the isolated valley of the Barun River. The trek continues on one side of the Isuwa Khola and Hingsa Khola on the other side. We finally exit the Makalu Barun National Park and tread until we arrive at Seduwa. Overnight in Seduwa.

  • Trek from Seduwa to Num: 5-6 hours
    The trail to Num passes through the thick rhododendron and bamboo forests. First, we pass Mulgaon and then head towards Lumbang. After crossing the Arun River, you further descend until you arrive at Num. This is another pleasant Sherpa village rich in cultural heritage. The surroundings around the village are excellent viewpoints to observe the nearby surroudings. Overnight in Num.

  • Trek from Num to Tumlingtar: 6-7 hours
    Today is the final day of the trekking. Leaving Num, you retrace your steps back to Chichila from where you can admire the views of Mt. Makalu for one last time. We continue our descent until we reach Khandbari where we shall have our lunch. From here, the trail further descends until we arrive at Tumlingtar. Overnight in Tumlingtar.

  • Tumlingtar to Kathmandu: 50 mins flight
    In the morning, you fly back to Kathmandu. After checking into the hotel, you can head out and explore the city. There are many shops and leisure places around the hotel area which will keep you entertained. In the evening, you can join the trekking team to celebrate the success of your trip. Overnight in Kathmandu.

  • Final Departure from Kathmandu
    The 21-day trip comes to an end today. After a fulfilling breakfast at the hotel, our company representative will have a brief session with you. Then, he will accompany you to the airport in our company van. Goodbye!
