Kathmandu Rara Motorcycle Tour

The tour explores along with the rigid landscapes that come on the journey to Rara Lake, the biggest in Nepal. The bumpy rides make for an adventure-filled trip to far-western Nepal, all the way to the isolated lands of Mugu and Jumla. As you get higher and the terrain gets tougher, every revolution of the throttle is rewarded by breathtaking sceneries, pushing you to get further. The motorcycle tour navigates the Thakuri villages to take on the pristine locales around Rara.

Kathmandu Rara Motorcycle Tour Overview

The journey begins from the capital city Kathmandu, where you hop on your bike for a long first day. You leave the capital, snaking down the Prithvi highway with the Trishuli River keeping you company. You will descend from the hills into the flatter regions of the low hills and Terai as you make your way to Butwal. After spending a night in Butwal, you will head towards Surkhet. The roads go through dense jungles and calmer roads.

You will head to Sinja valley for the day from Surkhet, and notice that the ride gets really tough. On the road to Sinja, you can see the roaring Karnali River and green settlements. From here, the road leads us to Rara Lake. Surrounded by green hills and snow-capped mountains in the background, the lake sits inside the Rara National Park.

The national park preserves the flora, fauna, and environs around the lake premise. After exploring around the national park, you prepare to head back to Kathmandu. On the way back, you take the route down to Khalanga bazaar, getting back to Surkhet on the next day. After the long journey, you will traverse back along the East-West Highway, reaching Chitwan. From Chitwan, the road takes us back to Kathmandu where the Rara Motorcycle tour shall end.

Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu
A company representative will greet you on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport and accompany you to a hotel. The trip will be explained to you, including all the small details about riding in Nepali roads. You will have an overview of the whole trip. You can spend the remainder of the day by exploring Thamel or testing the bikes. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 2
Ride Kathmandu to Butwal 266 km. 7 hours
The ride commences from today. You begin the ride on the Prithvi Highway alongside the Trishuli River, snaking down and up the hills until you arrive at Chitwan. This is where the road separates and we join the long East-West Highway. This road runs along the flatlands of Terai from one end of the country to another. We arrive at Butwal late in the afternoon. Overnight in Butwal.
Day 3
Ride Butwal to Surkhet 334 km. 8 hours
We will cruise through the Terai regions as we arrive at the Forested area of Banke and the Bardia National Park. We register ourselves and then ride ahead slowly soaking in the surroundings. We will arrive at a junction in Kohalpur from where the road separates to Surkhet. Overnight in Surkhet.
Day 4
Ride Surkhet to Sinja 91 km. 8 hours
Today, our route for the day is to Manma to Nangma. The roads soon become off-road, and the real thrill of the ride starts to invigorate our spirits. The pristine blue waters of the Karnali River join us on our journey, whereas settlements in forms of green hamlets sit on either side of the river banks. Arriving at Sinja, the wind ripples through the lush paddy fields. Overnight in Sinja valley.
Day 5
Ride Sinja to Rara 70 km. 8 hours
The road gets tougher as we climb up to reach the national park premises. The settlements get few and far in between. The road is dusty and bumpy, and will test the endurance of your shoulders. You continue the ride eventually, reaching the National Park premises at Ghorosingha. After a short walk of 1.5 hours climbing the tree line on the edges of the lake you will arrive on the Serene banks of Rara. Overnight in Rara.
Day 6
Rest day at Rara
Today, we hike in the premises of the Rara Lake and within the Rara National Park. Rara’s own song will captivate you at every corner of the Lake. Many animals find refuge in in the serene atmosphere around the Rara Lake including Rhesus and Langurs, Himalayan Tahr, Musk deer, and even Red pandas. Snow Trouts and Rara Trouts are fish exclusive to only the Rara Lake, while 16 species of birds unique to Nepal can be seen flying around. Similarly, the pristine environment around the Rara Lake is also suitable to appreciate the majesty of nature. Overnight in Rara.
Day 7
Exploration day
There is still much to explore around the Rara Lake. Murma viewpoint (3 Hrs hike from Rara Lake), offers colorful views of the whole majestic Rara lake. In addition to the lake itself, from Murma top you can witness mountains in Kanjirowa and Saipal Himal ranges. On a clear day, Api Himal (7132m) is also visible. After your excursion, you can come back down the lake and boat. The slow periodic slushy sounds of the water and birds chirping are the only sounds you hear while on the boat. Overnight in Rara.
Day 8
Ride back to Khalanga Bazaar Jumla. 8 hours
The road the Khalanga bazaar is as rough as you’ve come to expect. On the way to Khalanga Bazaar, you pass settlements such as Malikabota and Sanigaun. The hills and dense forests surround the roads, as you descend. Khalanga Bazaar welcomes you with its paved roads, which may be a relieving sight. Khalanga Bazaar is a lively settlement in Jumla and you can find many shops here. Overnight in Khalanga Bazaar.
Day 9
Ride back to Surkhet. 9 hours
We ride back down to Surkhet from Khalanga. The road is accompanied like before by another Branch of the Karnali River. The roads are outcropped into the hills which tower above you. And above those hills, snow-capped mountains are also occasionally visible. The drive covers a distance of over 300 km. Upon arrival in Surkhet, transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Surkhet.
Day 10
Ride back to Chitwan. 9 hours
On the ride back to Chitwan you retrace back the flatland roads of the Terai region. After days of rough rides, you will feel relaxed on getting on relatively flat and straight roads. Chitwan is a city in the Terai region which houses the famous Chitwan National Park. If you have time, you can choose to go sunbathing in the Rapti River or even observe the Narayani River. Overnight in Chitwan.
Day 11
Ride back to Kathmandu. 5 hours
From Chitwan, you shall drive back to Kathmandu for today. The drive goes through the Narayangarh Muglin highway which later joins the Prithvi Highway. Feast your eyes on the roaring Trishuli River and the green hills. After a brief stop at Galchi, we continue towards Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, we can go for souvenir shopping in Thamel. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 12
Final Departure
Today is your final day in Nepal and our representative will drop you off at the Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure.
