Helambu Trek

The trip takes you to the foothills of the Himalayas along the beautiful Sherpa Buddhist villages. The trail is a blend of majestic waterfalls, narrow streams, and pine forests. On this trek, you can catch a spectacular panoramic view of the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Gaurishankar (7134m), Jugal (8013m), and Number (6958m).  Make your way through numerous monasteries, stupas, Chorten, and prayers inscribed on stones to experience the unique cultures and beautiful landscapes of Nepal in a short time period.

Helambu Trek Overview

This incredible trek to the Helambu Valley commences after a quick exploration of the major UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Kathmandu valley which comprises Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. As you begin your trek from Sundarijal, you will pass by beautiful waterfalls and enter Shivapuri National Park. The Shivapuri National park sits north of Kathmandu and is spread in the districts of Nuwakot and Sindhupalchowk.

The trail goes through the minor settlement of Mulkharka and into Chisapani. From here, the trail initially descends to Gul Bhanjyang and later into the Sherpa inhabited community of Kutumsang. As we take in the panorama of the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges, we reach Thadepati. Take some time to comprehend the culture of its inhabitants and slowly make your way to Tarkeghyang.

Visit the Tarkeghyang monastery and relish at the sight of the culture of the Sherpas. Make your way through monasteries and chorten filled trails to arrive at Sermathang. The trail sees a decrease in altitude until we arrive at Melamchi Pul. After collecting our stuff in Melamchi Pul, we shall drive back to Kathmandu where the trip shall end. This trek is doable all year round, but spring and autumn is the best time for the Helambu trek.

Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu |1,300m
We will receive you at the Tribhuvan International airport and transfer you to a hotel. After that, we can explore the streets of Thamel and you can meet the guides and porters who will accompany you during the trek. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 2
Preparation for the Trek and rest
Today we will prepare for our trek and go for sightseeing around Kathmandu valley. We can visit the various UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath. As you explore these sites, you’ll learn about the prevailing culture and traditions in Nepal. Learn the ancient art of Newari architecture by visiting the Kathmandu Durbar Square. Get all your stuff sorted and prepare for the trek. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 3
Drive to Sundarijal & trek to Chisapani |2300m|: Drive 1 hour, Trek: 4 hours
The trek initially starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, starting point of this incredible trek. The trail starts near a small hydroelectric point and goes uphill through stunning waterfalls and Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to Mulkharka, a beautiful Tamang settlement. The route then heads down the ridge to Chisapani through dense forest of oak and rhododendron. Chisapani offers a breath-taking panoramic view of Gaurishankar in the east to Annapurna in the west. Overnight in Chisapani.
Day 4
Trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang |2446m|: 7 hours
The objective for the day is to reach Kutumsang and to reach there, we must indulge in walking for about 7 hours. The trial descends to Gul Bhanjyang, which is inhabited by the Sherpa and Tamang communities. The trail later climbs to a pass at 2620m and descend to Kutumsang. The trail offers a spectacular view of Langtang and Ganesh Himal range. Kutumsang is a small settlement deep in the wilderness of Helambu. Overnight in Kutumsang.
Day 5
Trek from Kutumsang to Thadepati |3650m|: 6 hours
After spending a night in Kutumsang, we shall aim to reach the Thadepati today. The trail to Thadepati ascends north up the Yurin Danda ridge through steep and eroded path. From here, the trail descends to Mangengoth and finally ascends to Thadepati. Thadepati hosts a stunning panoramic view of Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, and Numbur Himal ranges. It also offers a good view of Helambu valley below. Overnight in Thadepati.
Day 6
Trek to Tarkeghyang |2560m|: 6 hours
After breakfast, we descends steeply through pine and rhododendron forest to Melamchigaon and then to a small stream Melamchi. After crossing the stream, the path ascends to Tarkeghyang through a small Sherpa settlement. Along the way, we will pass by beautiful stupas and chorten with Mani walls and stones inscribed with prayers. Tarkeghyang is a beautiful Sherpa village and it houses the religious Tarkeghyang monastery. Overnight in Tarkeghyang.
Day 7
Trek to Sermathang |2,610m|: 3-4 hr
If you want to make the trek a little more exciting and thrilling. we can climb up to Yangri Peak (3770m) before heading to Sermathang. After climbing this peak, we shall head to Sermathang. The trail to Sermathang is quite easy and mostly passes through forested flatlands. Sermathang is a beautiful Sherpa village consisting of numerous ancient monasteries and hosts a great view of Langtang range. Overnight in Sermathang.
Day 8
Trek to Melamchi Pul Bazaar: Drive to Kathmandu: 3-4 hrs trek/ 2 hr drive, Farewell Dinner
From Sermathang, the trail goes downhill through some Sherpa villages to another Sherpa settlement, Melamchi Bazaar. The route passes through beautiful meadows, terraced fields, and dense forest. Along the way, we will pass by some streams and waterfalls. We will explore this beautiful valley and learn about the lifestyle and culture of Sherpas. The Melamchi Pul Bazaar is a bustling settlement that consists of bus stops and shops. We will then drive back to Kathmandu where we will enjoy a delicious Farewell dinner. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 9
We will drop you off at the Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight back marking an end of a wonderful adventure.
