Champadevi Hiking

Champadevi (about 2200 m) is a pure nature walk, located in the south-west of Kirtipur, an ancient city of Kathmandu. Hike this day tour without any disturbance of vehicles and pollution. As you go higher uphill, see mountain peaks and a bird’s eye view of the Kathmandu valley. Enjoy the cool and fresh air when you arrive at the top of Champadevi hill. Take pictures, and hike down to Kirtipur.

Champadevi Hiking Overview

It offers you breathtaking views of Everest, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Gaurishankar ranges and a visit to the prominent religious hub for Hindu and Buddhist devotees. The hike also gives you the pleasure of experiencing the traditional culture and lifestyle of the Newar community. Along with the amusement of lush vegetation along the trail, you can also relish the sights of the Kathmandu Valley. Champadevi Hiking offers a mesmerizing display of the natural, cultural, and religious aspects of the ethnic communities along the route.

Champadevi Hiking is a one day trekking in Nepal and begins early in the morning with a 50-minute drive from Thamel to Pharping. Crossing Taudaha, you will drive past various settlements of the Newar community and reach Pharping village. Here, you can visit famous Ashura Cave and Neydo Tashi Choeling Monastery. Once at Pharping, the hike begins. You will walk through lush forests filled with a plethora of wildlife. The trail goes gradually uphill for around an hour. You will further ascend crossing some stony paths.

After a continuous walk of two hours, you will reach the summit of Champadevi. Champadevi is also a religious hub for the Hindu and Buddhist followers.  You can visit the temple of Champadevi and a Buddhist monastery at the top. In the Champadevi hiking trail, you can feel the harmony between the two religions and the local communities is exemplary.

From the viewpoints around the Champadevi Hill, on a clear day, you can get to rejoice the views of looming Himalayas in the Langtang, Gaurishankar, and Ganesh Himal ranges. Also from here on steep uphill into forested areas to reach Champa Devi and the holy temple of Hindu Goddess, enjoy the tremendous panorama of Kathmandu valley with high snow-capped peaks in the north. You will now return to Pharping village from where you will take a drive back to Kathmandu.

The trail gives the pleasure of experiencing the natural flora and fauna of this region along with its unique culture and tradition. As the Champadevi day hike is easily accessible from Kathmandu, one can undertake the journey throughout the year.

Drive from Thamel to Pharping
Soon after breakfast, you will start your drive towards Pharping. It is a 50-minute drive from the Kathmandu Valley. Along the way, you will pass Taudaha, home to a varying species of birds. Enjoying a beautiful view of surroundings, you will finally reach your destination. Pharping is a Newari town where you can visit Asura Cave, Neydo Tashi Choeling Monastery, and Vajrayogini Temple.
Start walking from Pharping to Champadevi
From Pharping, you will begin the hike. Enjoying delightful views of traditional villages, you will take a steep climb to the top of the ridge and reach the summit of Champadevi Hill. Once at the top, you can observe the gorgeous views of the Kathmandu Valley. On a clear day, you can even rejoice the sights of Langtang (7227m), Gauri Shankar (7134m), Dorge Lakpa (6966m), and Jugal Himal range. An open shrine of Champadevi and a Buddhist monastery at the top are another major attractions. After you visit the Champadevi Temple vicinity, you will now descend from Champadevi Hill to Pushpalal Park (Machhegaun).
Drive back to Thamel
From Puspalal Park, you will now drive back to Thamel via Kirtipur. The drive will take you through small multi ethnic villages like Machhegaun, Bhatkya Pati, Na-Gaun, and Pyangaun (Traditional Newar Villages). If time permits, you can explore the historic Kirtipur Valley (Newar Settlement) with Bag Bhairav Temple. Along the way, you will get an opportunity to observe the culture and lifestyle of Newar community. Once at Thamel, you can buy souvenir, visit local market and even enjoy its nightlife if you have enough time.
