Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour Overview

The Buddhist Pilgrimage tour spans 8 days and commences upon your arrival at Kathmandu. The initial leg of the tour takes you through the major Buddhist sites and UNESCO World Heritage sites around Kathmandu valley. You will drive to Namobuddha which lies 38.3km southeast to Kathmandu city. Originally called Takmo Lüjin, it is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal.

Leaving Namobuddha, you’ll travel back to Kathmandu city and explore the popular UNESCO designated sites of Boudhanath Stupa and Swayambhunath. Boudhanath is a large stupa located amidst a crowded town while Swayambhunath lies atop a secluded hill. Despite the crowd of people, these sites are peaceful and relaxing. You’ll also get to explore the Kapan Monastery and White Gumba (Druk Amitabh Monastery) afterward.

The second leg of the tour begins with your departure to Lumbini which lies 265km southwest of Kathmandu in the Terai region. Lumbini boasts the exact birth site of Gautam Buddha. You explore the UNESCO site of Mayadevi Temple, Ashoka Pillar dating back to 3rd BC. World Peace Stupa, and numerous other Buddhist stupas around the temple’s vicinity. Day 1
Kathmandu Arrival | Welcome Dinner
Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, our representatives will receive you at the Tribhuvan International airport and transfer you to your hotel. You’ll meet your tour guide at the hotel and discuss the itinerary. You can head to the diners in the city to enjoy authentic Nepali dishes. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 2
Drive from Kathmandu to Namobuddha via Dhulikhel
The first part of the tour begins with a short drive to Namobuddha which is 38 km southeast to Kathmandu. Originally called Takmo Lüjin, it is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal. The place is popular for the local folklore of Gautam Buddha. The legend has it that Gautam Buddha, in his previous life, gave away his body to the starving tigress and her cubs at the exact site. You will explore the hilltop stupa/monastery and spend the night enjoying the majestic panorama of mountains. Overnight in Namobuddha.
Day 3
Drive back to Kathmandu and visit Boudhanath, Kapan Monastery
You’ll leave Namobuddha and drive back to Kathmandu city to visit Boudhanath, the largest stupa in Nepal. The area is predominantly inhabited by Tibetans, hence you’ll get to explore the Tibetan lifestyle, culture, art, and cuisine up-close. You can enjoy the local Tibetan cuisines including Salt Tea and Laphing. Afterward, you’ll drive further east to the hilltop monastery of Kapan. A special retreat, most people visit the place for its calm environment and meditation center. The monastery was founded in 1979 and has housed monks and nun. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 4
Visit Swayambhunath and White Gompa, Ramkot
The motive for the day is to visit Swayambhunath and White Gompa. Legend dictates that the Stupa sprouted from a lotus millenniums ago. This stupa has strong ties to Buddhism and its forests are abode to monkeys. The stupa is surrounded by many smaller chortens and temples. To reach the top, you must climb the 365 stone steps which can be a quite adventurous experience. Afterward, you will head 5km northwest to another popular site of White Monastery (Druk Amitabh Monastery) located atop the forested Nagarjuna Hill. It is ranked amongst the largest monasteries in Nepal. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 5
Drive to Lumbini |7-8 Hrs
The second aspect of the tour begins with your departure to Lumbini. You’ll embark on a rather long road journey to the southwest of Nepal. Lying almost 260km southwest of Kathmandu in the Rupandehi district, Lumbini remains a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site and the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. You’ll pass through the colorful towns of Bharatpur, Kawasoti, and Ramnagar en route. Lumbini is also an important UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal. Thousands of devotees and tourists visit the place every year. Overnight in Lumbini.
Day 6
Lumbini Sightseeing
Today, you’ll indulge in a complete cultural and sightseeing tour of Lumbini. Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha, and it is from here that Buddhism flourished throughout the world. The tour begins with the visit to the historical site of Maya Devi Temple. The 3rd BCE UNESCO designated site is well preserved for tourists. The temple stands adjacent to a sacred pond and a Bodhi tree. You will also find the large metal structure (Ashoka Pillar) built by Emperor Ashoka in 3rd BCE inside the temple’s vicinity. Afterward, you’ll advance further and explore the nearby Buddhist stupas and natural garden. Overnight in Lumbini.
Day 7
Drive back to Kathmandu
The second leg of the tour ends with your arrival to Kathmandu. You’ll retrace your path and head back to Kathmandu. A long drive will follow along with the plain landscape and tropical forests of the Terai region. Once at Kathmandu, you’ll be escorted back to your hotel. You can shop for gifts and souvenirs as you prepare to head to your destination.
Day 8
Departure
Today you’ll drive to the Tribhuvan International Airport to catch your flight back home. You’ll leave approximately 2hr early to avoid any delays from traffic congestion.
